Some schools and colleges in Leeds have atypical admission ages so admit students at a different age to typical 11-18 secondary schools. These are additional options available at age 14 and does not mean you are required to move your child from their existing school if this is still the best option for them.
As your child begins Year 9 they will be discussing these options in more detail with their careers advisers at school. You should look at the GCSE curriculum on offer at your child’s current school alongside the opportunities below, to help consider what is the best option for the next two years of your child’s education.
Leeds University Technical College (UTC Leeds)
UTC Leeds is a school/ college for 14 -19 year old students that would like to specialise in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Your son or daughter would leave their current school and join in either Year 10 or Year 12. Students in Year 10 follow the usual GCSE subjects including Maths, English Language and Literature, Sciences as well as Computer Science and Geography. Alongside these subjects they will study Engineering Manufacture, and then a choice of either Engineering design or Systems and Control.

Leeds City College 14+ Apprenticeship Academy
In September 2013 Leeds City College opened its 14+ Apprenticeship Academy. Your son or daughter would leave their current school and join from Year 10. Students complete a range of GCSEs including English, Maths, Science, ICT, Business and Citizenship. Alongside these subjects they will learn vocationally relevant skills in work environments, for example in the college’s Food Academy restaurant, butchery, engineering workshops or hairdressing salons. Students also participate in work experience placements.
